Außerdem hat del Toro auf dem Messageboard darauf hingewiesen, dass die internationalen Starttermine (Deutschland: 16. September) auch wieder vorgezogen werden könnten - sollte der Film in den USA sehr gut anlaufen.

Bei Sideshow kann man Hellboys Revolver, den Samaritan, in Originalgröße mit Patronen und Display vorbestellen! Zudem Hellboys "Right Hand of Doom" aus Latex mit Griff im Innern - fehlt nur noch ein langer Mantel und man hat das ideale Outfit für die nächste Comicconvention!

Kurz vor US-Start gibt's jetzt die ersten Hellboy-Reviews, z.B. auf CHUD.com oder Aintitcoolnews.com - schaut mal rein. Kleine Kostprobe:

"Anyway, not too be too cheeky, but it was a helluva show. Guillermo introduced the picture in the only way Guillermo can... by talking about his new weight loss. "Soon I will be able to see my dick again!" That was only the tip of the iceberg! Gotta love how he gives an NC-17 opening speech to a PG-13 movie. That's Guillermo for ya'! I just thought it particularly funny because immediately to my left was a family with at least 4 kids around the age of 10. (...)

The film kicks so much ass, guys. Del Toro plays to all the great base geek cornerstones. Tentacled Lovecraftian Gods, hot super-powered chicks, badass butt-kicking anti-hero, evil nazi zombie assassins, supernatural monsters and Baby Ruth addiction! It's all there!"

'Hellboy' -- A slice of heaven for moviegoers

(CNN) -- One of the great things about having a passion for film is those
rare moments when a movie reminds you of why you fell in love with the
medium in the first place.

A lot of people discovered their love of movies through "Jaws" or "Star
Wars." Then, people found "Ghostbusters" and "Die Hard" or the Indiana Jones
films. In recent memory, the obvious candidates would be "The Lord of the
Rings" trilogy as well as the "Matrix" series. This Friday brings another
film to add to that list: "Hellboy."

As a movie-watching culture, we take the good with the bad, and often the
bad far outweighs the good. The magical moments are fleeting, with
potentially classic scenes often buried under fast edits, showy special
effects and a steady diet of loud noise and music.

Director Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" is a choice cut of a film, something
with true heart and emotion that manages to achieve summer movie spectacle
without sacrificing story in lieu of showing off. It's a film with a memory.

There's a lineage, a bloodline living under the surface of the film that
recalls pivotal stories such as "Beauty and the Beast," those great Ray
Harryhausen "Sinbad" films and more recent classics both gothic and
adventurous. For a cynic such as myself, who spends his days complaining
about the business, "Hellboy" a breath of fresh air, even if it may carry a
hint of sulfur. For people starting to develop their own movie tastes, it
just might be their "Jaws" or their "Ghostbusters."

It's the rotten apples (bad movies) that spoil it for the bunch. But it's
those few examples of purity that keep us from developing a "glass is
half-empty" mentality. It's all too easy to become grumpy and unforgiving in
our tastes, adopting that mentality of parents and grandparents about how
"they don't make 'em like they used to" anymore.

We need a fresh, uncompromising film such as "Hellboy" to clear the air and
remind us why we trade movie quotes, debate over which franchises are the
best and plunk down untold dollars at the box office and DVD store.

In a way, I think movies can keep us young, if only for a moment. If we can
regain that feeling we got the first time we saw Indy outrun the boulder,
James Stewart grapple with Raymond Burr in "Rear Window" or King Kong "fall"
for Fay Wray, then some of their immortality rubs off on us. It's why movies
have a power over us all, regardless of age, race and political leaning.

"Hellboy" is the latest film that battered my walls of cynicism to a pulp.
It reminded me of when I was the ripe age of 5, watching Steven Spielberg's
shark wreak havoc by peering through the sleeve of my coat -- too afraid to
watch but too enraptured not to see what was happening. "Hellboy" is an
underdog, a relatively inexpensive summer movie based on a comic book that
aspires to be something more.

How can you not root for a movie like that?

Hat eigentlich schon jemand das Hellboy - The Art Of The Movie-Buch gründlich studiert? Ich ringe da noch mit mir ... einerseits bin ich natürlich von immenser Neugier erfüllt, andererseits weiß ich nicht, ob es ratsam ist, schon im Vorfeld das komplette Filmskript zu lesen, denn ich befürchte, dass das die Wirkung des Films beim ersten Ansehen ein wenig schmälern könnte. Also habe ich das Ding bislang nur flüchtig durchgeblättert und danach brav ins Regal gestellt. Und da wird es wohl bis September warten, wenn ich mich beherrschen kann ...

The lowdown: Outlandish, smart comic-book movie with a lot of heart; terrific performance by Ron Perlman

Even by the standards of American comic books, "Hellboy" is pretty nuts.

The original Dark Horse comic, written and drawn by Mike Mignola, tells the tale of Nazis who conjure a demon (with the help of the "Mad Monk" himself, Rasputin). Their goal? To spark the Apocalypse, which apparently involves dragons trapped in a rock in outer space.

But before they can finish the job, Army GIs grab the demon, name him "Hellboy," and raise him as a red-blooded American. Flash-forward half a century. Hellboy's now a cigar-chomping "paranormal investigator" who smashes monsters with his hypertrophic "Right Hand of Doom." His co-workers include a fish-man and a pyrokinetic woman who can barely control her "firestarter" abilities.

Over the course of five graphic novels and assorted spinoffs, Mignola spun all these goofy elements into a huge, convoluted yarn -- with vampires, werewolves, goddesses, witches, aliens and creatures of folklore all smacking Hellboy around, while Rasputin and the Nazis try to con him into finishing that whole Apocalypse business.

Sound goofy? It is. And it totally works. "Hellboy's" one of the best comic books of the past 15 years because of the way the story is told -- with stripped-down artwork, diamond-hard dialogue and a nasty sense of humor. Hellboy himself is a blue-collar guy with sawed-off horns and an even more sawed-off temper. (He's the sort of fellow who, when reminded for the umpteenth time that he was brought to Earth to destroy it, responds with, "Sorry to interrupt, but you're literally boring me to death.")

Which brings us to the film version of "Hellboy," written and directed by Guillermo del Toro ("Blade II," "Cronos"). Del Toro's movie has, in many ways, the exact strengths and weaknesses of the comic book -- it's an outlandish story held together by great characters and sharp, human details. It's a lot like the first "X-Men" movie that way.

The story's a grab-bag of every supervillain/doomsday scenario you've ever seen. Del Toro's like this awesome, omnivorous geek machine, and God bless him for that: He Osterizes the plot with references to high -- and lowbrow -- fantasy: the source comic, H.P. Lovecraft, monster movies, even "The Fifth Element." (Heck, since Rasputin and the Nazis are trying to summon an alien invasion, he might even be throwing some "Howard the Duck" in there.)

But the film's strengths don't lie in its story, which probably involves a few too many indestructible beings for its own good. Hellboy is inflammable; the Nazis are immortal; Rasputin is eternal; a demon can replicate itself endlessly. How can anybody lose? No, "Hellboy" works because of its little poetic moments and some killer casting.

Ron Perlman (TV's "Beauty and the Beast") plays the title imp -- and it quickly becomes obvious that, despite looking like Tim Curry's stunt double on the set of "Legend," Perlman is giving the performance of his life. Hellboy's initial gruffness gives way to something far more vulnerable and tragic, thanks to his unrequited love for firestarter Liz (Selma Blair). In fact, the best stretch of the movie is the one with the least action -- with Hellboy and a 9-year-old kid spying on Liz, eating cookies and riffing on love.

There are so many strange little details to love here -- real monsters fighting among Halloween trick-or-treaters, a century-old Nazi kept alive by Victorian clockworks, Jeffrey Tambor (as Hellboy's exasperated boss) sharing a cigar, Hellboy stealing beer with his tail, Hellboy reanimating a corpse to ask for directions, Hellboy and his minder talking about hair implants, Hellboy's chemistry with fish-man Abe (voiced by David Hyde Pierce). . . . The movie's got a heart as warm as hellfire.

Wie auch schon in den Film-Splashnews berichtet, hat Hellboy einen guten Start hingelegt: $ 23,5 Millionen fürs erste Wochenende sind ganz ordentlich und so auch von Sony erhofft gewesen. War klar, dass man nicht Blockbusterzahlen wie bei Spider-Man erwarten konnte. Für einen unbekannten und schwer zugänglichen Comicstoff ohne Starschauspieler ist's aber ein großer Erfolg! Die guten Kritiken und die Werbepower ($ 25 Millionen!) haben anscheinend viele Leute überzeugt. Hoffentlich läuft es auch in Deutschland so gut...

Ein brillanter Film, der der Comicvorlage sehr treu bleibt aber auch eigene Akzente für das Medium Film setzt.

We are in our 3rd weekend at the Box Office and we are holding real well. We opened in several Asian territories and all box office reports are excellent. I am meeting this week with Sony to firm up teh release dates evereywhere else. We are in talks with Gonzo Anime for the HELLBOY anime series and we are shopping for the best possible videogame publishers -Spyda you are a genius- and possible engines. Mike Mignola and I will be involved inthe plotting of it to make sure that in flows with the mythology of the movie (s) anime, comic, etc, etc

Mezco Toys is prepping a SECOND WAVE Hellboy Toys. I know that they're planning a bitchin' NAZI KROENEN and a full-blown PRINCE OF DARKNESS HELLBOY standing over the city rubble. I would like to propose this... Make a poll as to your favorite action figure and I PROMISE I'll fight to get it made in the *" version, how is that???

And, yes, we are talking about a second movie. The B.O. numbers make perfect sense since we were a relatrively "inexpensive" movie at under $70 million and we will make enough domestically. Mike and I are fleshing out ideas and storylines we've been discussing for some time now. Mike thinks there will be no Lobster -sob- but Roger is in for sure. Some of the plotting will have hints of ALMOST COLOSSUS and C. WORM...

These days I am finishing MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and will turn it in to Dreamworks in about a week or so... I miss you guys and would love to stay in touch. My "Abe" adress at hotmail is swamped and I haven't had a single moment to adress all letters, but I've read them all. Keep 'em coming. I love to hear from you even if I cannot answer timely...

Den kompletten Film habe ich zwar noch nicht gesehen, aber heute kam bei mir eine dieser Preview-DVDs an, die es in den Staaten kostenlos bei "Best Buy" gab. Da sind neben dem kurzen und dem langen Trailer immerhin rund 10 Minuten an Material drauf ... und meine ohnehin schon beträchtliche Vorfreude auf den deutschen Kinostart wächst immer weiter.
Na klar, ein paar kleinere Sachen, die mir nicht ganz so gut gefallen, gibt es natürlich auch (z.B. die Inneneinrichtung des B.P.R.D.-Gebäudes und Abrahams "zusätzliche" Fähigkeit), aber die fallen im Gesamtkontext kaum ins Gewicht. Insgesamt wird der Film ganz bestimmt einen Heidenspaß machen. Und besonders wichtig: Es hat sich in den gezeigten Szenen der schon von Adrian Turnipseed angedeutete Eindruck bestätigt, dass der Film vom "Spirit" her sehr stark den Comics zu entsprechen scheint. Vor allem: Ron Perlman ist Hellboy. Seine Charakterisierung trifft wirklich voll ins Schwarze. Bringt der Film also vielleicht auch in Deutschland den lange verdienten großen Durchbruch für Perlman ... und für Hellboy?

Kleines Detail am Rande: Natürlich bin ich alles andere als unvoreingenommen, aber auf der DVD war auch ein Trailer zu "Spider-Man 2" enthalten, und ich fand, dass der im direkten Vergleich ungemein blass und langweilig wirkte ...

Und noch etwas: Ich bin schon einigermaßen gespannt darauf, wie hierzulande in den einschlägigen Feuilletons die Reaktionen auf Figuren wie Freundchen Kroenen in seiner schicken Unform ausfallen werden ...

Ein paar deutsche Besprechungen gibt es ja schon - überraschenderweise recht positiv. Als der Film noch für April angekündigt war, hatten sich viele Filmzeitschriften in ihren Jahresvorschauen auch schon sehr positiv geäußert. Ich bin also guter Dinge...

Nach zweimaligem Ansehen des Films gefallen mir lediglich drei Sachen nicht: Sammael spielt eine zu große Rolle (ist ja im Prinzip nicht schlecht, aber er hat leider nicht die Monster-Qualität der Aliens oder Emmerichs Baby-Godzillas), die Filmmusik ist doch etwas zu traditionell und Rasputins Auferstehung kommt zu plötzlich und zu unspektakulär.

Ansonsten: Klasse! Kroenen kommt als stummer Bösewicht besser als Darth Maul und sogar Baby-Hellboy ist sehr gut gelungen. Ron mit seinen ganzen Teenager-Problemen ist eh der Größte!

So gesehen ist es schade, dass Hellboy wegen seines abgefahrenen Grundkonzepts viel weniger einspielen wird, als aufgeblasene Effektorgien ohne nennenswerte Handlung wie Hulk oder Van Helsing...

Habe eben gelesen, das Dark Horse im April mehr Hellboy Tradepaperbacks verkauft hat, als in den vergangenen 10 Jahren! Sie haben 30.000 Bände aus China per Luftfracht einfliegen lassen und es war trotzdem nicht genug. Gleichzeitig beklagen sich die US-Comichändler, dass der Punisher Film-Comic wie Blei in den Regalen liegt
Sigh! Hierzulande wird es wohl eher umgekehrt sein, befürchte ich. Ich kann mir keinen deutschen Comichändler vorstellen, der mutig genug wäre, sein Schaufenster mit unseren Hellboy Comics und Hellboy-Merchandising zu dekorieren...

Dochdoch. Mein Dealer hier in München hat extra einen wunderbar dekorierten Hellboy-Tisch gemacht. Dort findet man neben Figuren, US-Trades und -Einzelheften, den "Art of Hellboy"-Hardcover natürlich auch die Cross-Cult-Ausgaben.
Ist nicht Schaufenster, aber schon eine prominente Platzierung. Vielleicht rückt das ganze dann zum Deutschland-Start ins Fenster...

Hi! Bin neu hier

Ich denke auch das es, kurz bevor der Film hier anläuft, mehr Hellboy in den Comicläden geben wird. In Frankfurt gibt es jetzt schon eure Ausgaben, die Dark Horse TPBs und auch sehr viele der Mezco Figuren.

Mir zum Beispiel hat der Film so gut gefallen, das ich mir erstmal sämtliche eurer Ausgaben und noch ein paar Dark Horse TPBs bestellt habe

Da kommen bestimmt noch mehr nach!

Jaja, man merkt auch bei Ebay, dass der Filmstart langsam (laaangsam) näher rückt ... es häuft sich nicht nur das Angebot von Film-bezogenem HB-Zubehör, sondern es tauchen auch einige ältere Sachen auf, die ich da in den Jahren zuvor kaum gefunden habe. Der Bekanntheitsgrad des Namen "Hellboy" steigt hierzulande also wirklich, würde ich sagen.
An den ganz großen Durchbruch für den roten Jungen wage ich zwar auch noch nicht zu glauben, aber es steht auf jeden Fall ein großer Schritt in die richtige Richtung bevor.

Schön zu hören, dass Hellboy bereits jetzt in einigen Comicläden gut präsentiert wird. Hoffentlich werden diese Händler spätestens wenn der Film in die Kinos kommt auch belohnt. In den USA hat der Film jedenfalls viele Bisher-Nicht-Comicleser neugierig gemacht.
Ich bin froh, dass wir unsere Aufmachung nicht an den US-Ausgaben angelehnt haben. Bei unseren Mini-Auflagen hätten unsere Ausgaben sonst locker das doppelte der US-TPBs gekostet. So wie es jetzt ist, haben wir wenigstens Hardcover, gutes Papier und die Leser können Mignolas Zeichnungen so sehen, wie sie auf seinem Zeichentisch entstanden sind - ohne oft zu dunkel gedruckte Farben.

Ich bin auch froh das ihr euch nicht die US-TPBs als Vorlage genommen habt. Hardcover, schwarz/weiss und das kleinere Format gefällt mir wesentlich besser.

Wie sieht es eigentlich mir Hellboy Nummer 5 aus? Erscheint das pünktlich am 1.6.?

US-Redakteur Scott Allie und wohl auch Mignola finden unsere Aufmachung auch besser als ihre eigene Deshalb hat Allie die "Books of Hauntings", "Books of Witchcraft"-Reihe in unserem Format gemacht... die sind allerdings farbig - in den USA empfinden Normalleser schwarz/weiß wohl immer noch als "minderwertig".

Wenn die Druckerei nicht Mist baut, wird Band 5 pünktlich fertig.

Ist mal wieder ein fetter Band geworden: Neben einigen der besten Hellboy-Stories gibt's ein exklusives Vorwort von Hellboy-Film-Designer TyRuben Ellingson, eine umfangreiche Mignola Skizzengalerie, ein Artikel über Mignolas literarische Einflüsse, Pin-Ups von Andreas Pasda ("Abrafaxe" - einer der wenigen hauptberuflichen Comiczeichner in Deutschland), Benjamin von Eckartsberg, Thomas von Kummant, Boris Kiselicki, Marc Herold (alle von der Münchener "Artillerie"), Marcus Schäfer, Titus Ackermann (MogaMobo) und alle 8 Pin-Ups aus den japanischen Hellboy-Ausgaben (Kia Asamiya, Katsuya Terada, Takehito Ito, Yasuhiro Naito u.a.).
Übrigens: Die Pfannkuchen-Geschichte aus diesem Band wird als Teaser farbig in Comixene 74/75 abgedruckt, diese Ausgabe ist gleichzeitig das offizielle Programmheft des Salons in Erlangen. Ich hoffe also auf einen kleinen Werbe-Effekt.

US-Redakteur Scott Allie und wohl auch Mignola finden unsere Aufmachung auch besser als ihre eigene Deshalb hat Allie die "Books of Hauntings", "Books of Witchcraft"-Reihe in unserem Format gemacht...

... und bei der Nominierung des Dark Horse Book of Hauntings für den Eisner-Award in der Kategorie "Best Anthology" dürfen sich demnach auch unsere wackeren CrossCultler - zumindest zum Teil - mit-nominiert fühlen, finde ich.

Dass ihr die umwerfende Pancakes- (bzw. Pamcakes)-Story zudem noch per Comixene verbreiten lasst, spricht natürlich ebenfalls sehr für euch und wird hoffentlich den gewünschten Effekt bringen. Am abgedruckten Material dürfte es wohl jedenfalls nicht liegen, falls es mit dem Hellboy-Boom in Deutschland dann doch nicht klappen sollte.
Ich selbst betreibe übrigens gerade aktive Hellboy-Propaganda, indem ich an alle halbwegs dafür empfänglichen Leute aus meinem Bekanntenkreis die 25-Cent-Ausgaben von The Corpse verschenke. Mal sehen, ob das fruchtet ... viele meine "Opfer" sind bislang nicht einmal Comicleser und somit eine besonders schwierige Zielgruppe.

Ja, das 25 Cent-Teil ist eine schöne Sache - es wurde auch in manchen Kinos verteilt. Ich wünschte, wir hätten auch genug Kohle, so ein quasi Umsonst-Heft zu veröffentlichen. Immerhin drucken wir gerade das Werbeheftchen "Gringo-Gazette" im A5-Format, das über Vertriebe verteilt wird und an Comixene-Abokunden geht. Enthalten ist auch eine zweiseitige Hellboy-Lesepreobe aus unserem neuen Band.

Trotzdem immer noch ernüchternd, dass wir gerade mal 1.000 bis 1.200 Exemplare pro Band los werden... selbst mittelgroße Verlage wie Speed und Salleck verkaufen oft 3.000 bis 4.000 Exemplare - und deren Comics sind garantiert nicht besser als Hellboy. Klar, die haben größere Programme und somit viele Stammkunden - für Mignola wär's sicher besser, er wäre bei Carlsen oder Ehapa gelandet. Als Mini-Verlag tritt man da irgendwie auf der Stelle. Sic!
